Republican DNA Bank

Center for the Preservation of Genetic Resources of Humans, Animals, Plants, and Microorganisms

General Information

The Republican DNA Bank of humans, animals, plants, and microorganisms was established at the Institute of Genetics and Cytology of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus in 2013 by order of the Prime Minister of the Republic of Belarus.

In 2016, the Bank was granted the status of National Heritage (Resolution of the Council of Ministers No. 629). Its activities are carried out in compliance with legal regulations, including the Law of the Republic of Belarus “On Genetic Resources Management” of March 5, 2024, No.356-3

Thematic Sections

Human DNA Bank

Preservation of human genetic material for scientific research

Animal DNA Bank

Collection of genetic material from animals for ecological research

Plant DNA Bank

Preservation of rare and invasive plant species of Belarus

Microorganism DNA Bank

Collection of genetic material from microorganisms

Deposition Forms

The DNA Bank offers two collaboration formats for the preservation and use of genetic material.

Long-Term Storage

DNA samples of strategic interest for prospective scientific research in the future are accepted.

Storage for Scientific Purposes

Samples for current research. May be provided to legal entities (with depositor consent) for molecular genetic work.

Scientific Activities

The Republican DNA Bank possesses unique material for projects in the field of genetics and ecology.

  • DNA Barcoding: Confirmation of species identity through sequencing methods to eliminate errors.
  • Red Book of Belarus: Collection of rare plant species (collected without removal from their natural habitats).
  • Flora of Belarus: Collections of tree, shrub, invasive species, and pollen.

Collaboration

The DNA Bank is open to collaboration with institutes, laboratories, and biobanks. Agreements have been concluded with a number of institutions.
