QUANTITATIVE GENETIC RISK EVALUATION OF THE DEVELOPMENT OF CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASES OF DIFFERENT NOSOLOGY

Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are the main cause of death worldwide. It has been proven that the contribution of hereditary factors to mortality from CVD is approximately 50%.

The specialists of the Institute of Genetics and Cytology, NAS of Belarus, have developed a method for the quantitative evaluation of the genetic risk of cardiovascular diseases’ development:

  1. Myocardial infarction
  2. Phlebothrombosis
  3. Atrial fibrillation
  4. Pulmonary embolism

Using a specialized computer program, scientists have determined the most significant complexes of unfavorable gene variants associated with each of the four nosologies of cardiovascular diseases. When calculating the risk of a certain pathology, the contribution of both individual genes and risk gene complexes was considered, and we determined how many times the risk of each of the above nosologies is increased (in the case of its increase) in a person under study. Genetic risk may or may not manifest itself depending on lifestyle. Provoking factors include smoking, a sedentary lifestyle, excess weight and severe stress. Where genetic testing reveals an increased risk of the above diseases, please consult a doctor to make a timely decision on the prevention or treatment of cardiovascular diseases.
