HYPERCHOLESTEROLEMIA

Cholesterol is an organic compound, most of which, approximately 80%, is synthesized in the liver, and approximately 20% we get from food. Cholesterol is necessary for the body to build cell membranes, synthesize bile acids and produce some hormones and vitamin D.

A condition in which the concentration of cholesterol in the blood increases is called hypercholesterolemia. At least 10% of the population suffers from hypercholesterolemia. An increase in the cholesterol content in the blood serum is observed in the case of primary hyperlipoproteinemia — hereditary metabolic disorders and secondary hyperlipoproteinemia caused by heart, liver, kidney, pancreas, thyroid gland and other diseases.

Excess cholesterol leads to vascular atherosclerosis. Hypercholesterolemia is one of the main risk factors of cardiovascular diseases. The specialists of the Institute of Genetics and Cytology have developed a service – DNA diagnostics of a predisposition to hypercholesterolemia. Genetic testing makes it possible to determine genetic markers associated with increased cholesterol levels so that in the case of hypercholesterolemia risk, preventive or therapeutic measures can be taken.
