A condition in which the concentration of cholesterol in the blood increases is called hypercholesterolemia. At least 10% of the population suffers from hypercholesterolemia. An increase in the cholesterol content in the blood serum is observed in the case of primary hyperlipoproteinemia — hereditary metabolic disorders and secondary hyperlipoproteinemia caused by heart, liver, kidney, pancreas, thyroid gland and other diseases.
Excess cholesterol leads to vascular atherosclerosis. Hypercholesterolemia is one of the main risk factors of cardiovascular diseases.
